Ep. 6: The Campus Free Speech Act Part 1

About the Campus Free Speech Act

In the sixth episode of Bills with Luke Scorziell we review Section One of the Campus Free Speech Act, a piece of mock legislation published by the Goldwater Institute. Today’s episode marks the introduction of the High School Culture segment with an analysis of Jim and Pam’s relationship on The Office.

Click here to listen to the second part of the Campus Free Speech Act series. We review sections two through five of the act, which have to do with the disciplinary measures the act enforces.

The Campus Free Speech Act is currently being considered by a number of states including Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, California, North Carolina, Michigan, Louisiana, and Georgia, according to the Wall Street Journal. The legislation works to promote freedom of expression, keep public universities neutral regarding current political affairs, and move to discipline students or faculty obstructing the free speech of others. In my analysis of the bill we use the University of Chicago’s Kalven Report and Stone Report as well as the Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression at Yale.
